Leadership Team

President & CEO
Meet Ken,
Among various achievements, Ken co-founded and created a Canadian industry leading Risk Mitigation organization with 24 offices and over 1200 employees, with private equity from both Toronto and San Francisco. Ken lead corporate branding, business development, background screening, mergers and acquisitions, prior to leaving the firm in 2017. Today he is a consultant, mentor and investor in properties, brands, and multiple companies.
As a licensed Security Consultant and Professional Investigator, Ken was twice elected Director of the Professional Investigator’s Association of BC. He was a chapter founder and Canadian liaison for the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS), Canadian Regional Director of the Council of International Investigators (CII), and was elected President of Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers. Ken is also a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and a member of the World Association of Detectives (WAD).

CTO
Meet James,
Prior to the proliferation of smart phones, James lead a team of developers to create and improve a taxi hailing system, that integrated with credit card payment terminals. With American partners, he then developed scalable and high uptime custom payment systems for credit card and cheque processing applications that today serves millions of consumers throughout the United States.
He currently oversees all architecture, development and integrations at ModoHR, and continually demonstrates a unique ability to understand and articulate the needs of each client.

Michelle Moffatt
VP, Client Services
Meet Michelle,
An early entrepreneur, Michelle founded and operated 2 private businesses while starting a family in Ontario, Canada. Subsequently after negotiating successful acquisitions of her businesses, Michelle moved her family to Vancouver, British Columbia.
In 2008, Michelle joined Canada’s largest Risk Mitigation company and subsequently invested in CKR Global. She co-lead the merging of Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver background screening operations, and expanded the Ethics Reporting services to be both national, bilingual and scalable. She held the position of Commissioner of Oaths for Affidavits in British Columbia.
Michelle has been an active member of the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS), a BCIT Computer Business Sciences graduate, and a member of the Canadian Standards Association, Working Group for creating policy for Reporting Sensitive Workplace issues in Canada.

Rod Piukkala
VP, Police Technology & Compliance
Meet Rod,
A 30 Year Law Enforcement professional achieving the pinnacle rank of Police Chief in Ontario, Canada. Rod’s prime responsibility is continuous review of regulatory requirements and legislative/ policy changes that impact Canadian background screening. His extensive knowledge is routinely presented at provincial HR associations and police agencies. Rod advocates to key government and public safety sectors on behalf of the organization and remains a longstanding member of the National Association of Professional Background Screeners’ association (NAPBS) Government Relations committee.

Kash Heed
VP, Public Safety
Meet Kash,
Kash began his public service with the Vancouver Police Department, where he ascended through the ranks. He held high profile commands in the fields of drug and gang enforcement, arising to the rank of Superintendent before leaving to become the Chief Constable of the West Vancouver Police Department, creating history by becoming the first South Asian head of a police force in North America.
In 2009, Kash was elected to the BC Legislative Assembly. He was appointed as the Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General for British Columbia. He holds a Master of Arts degree and a Bachelor of General Studies degree in the field of Leadership in Public Safety from the School of Criminology at Simon Fraser University.
Kash is a published author, an Adjunct Professor, and a strong and vocal advocate for smarter approaches to law enforcement and drug policy. He is recognized as one of the preeminent authorities on public safety in Canada and is the subject of several news items and documentaries. Currently, Kash is a strategy consultant on specialized issues related to law enforcement, background screening, security, drug policy, youth and gang problems, and public safety leadership.

Chris Mason
VP, Corporate Counsel
Meet Chris,
Chris has a law degree from the University of Saskatchewan and is a Licensed Investigator and Security Consultant in multiple provinces. He has worked with many of Canada’s largest brands providing Human Rights, Regulatory advice and Labour Relations guidance. Chris was previously Legal Counsel at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan investigating and prosecuting physicians for unprofessional behaviour. Chris is routinely called upon as a subject matter expert related to mediating regulatory disputes and providing legal counsel to various private corporations.

Tim Fernback
VP, Finance
Meet Tim,
A licensed Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CMA), Tim obtained his Honours BSc from McMaster University in 1991, and his MBA from the University of British Columbia specializing in finance in 1993. Tim brings to the Company over 25 years of experience in financing and operating both public and private small-capitalization technology companies in Canada. Tim has successfully completed the Canadian Securities Course as well as the Partners, Directors and Senior Officers Qualifying Exam in Canada.
Tim is the current and former director and officer of several public companies traded on the TSXV, OTCQB and ASX, as well as the current VP Finance for ModoHR Technologies.

Lena Hutzcal
Director, National Accounts
Meet Lena,
Lena has an entrepreneurial spirit with over 15 years of business development, account management and sales experience. She is tenacious in building new business, securing customer loyalty and forging strong relationships.
Prior to joining ModoHR, Lena worked with a global SaaS firm providing eReference solutions to companies in Canada and was the National Account Manager for an investigation firm, where her portfolio included the public and private sector, legal, finance, mining, and manufacturing. She was the Canadian Managing Director for a staffing agency focusing on geosciences, engineering and overseeing offices in BC and Yukon. Through her experience, she has gained an understanding of the needs of recruitment and hiring managers and the importance of ensuring due diligence on employee selection
She believes in volunteering her time for worthy causes and currently sits on the Board for Women in Sales (WINS Vancouver) and was previously Vice-Chair of the Board and Vice-President at Women in Mining BC (WIMBC), Director- Richmond Chamber of Commerce and Board member – Canadian Liver Foundation.

Meet Tim,
In 2015, Tim assisted with the brand management positioning of Sterling with the successful acquisition by Goldman Sachs. After the sale, Tim took on a new role with Mindfield in the Talent Acquisition industry leading the Marketing, Advertising, and overall brand management and strategy.
Currently, Tim oversees all the start-up brand management in the fast-paced technology environment at ModoHR. With a focus on strategy, creativity and process, Tim strives to help build the organization’s brand value through relevant design and messaging, combined with a strong technology backbone and a vision for growth.
